The History of LMR
Over thirty years ago, Richmond was a very different place. Our community was separated by race, neighborhoods and the battle between the city and the counties. These trends were under-scored by the changing corporate climate that was forcing Richmond to look beyond its borders as the private sector became more sophisticated and expanded its reach both nationally and globally.
In response to these new trends, a courageous group of visionary leaders gathered to participate in a new Chamber based program designed to connect a diverse group of emerging leaders for thoughtful examination of the challenges within the community and gather multiple perspectives on these challenges while creating a safe environment of understanding and respect for the viewpoints of others. Those 42 courageous individuals headed up the first Leadership Metro Richmond class.
Since 1980, Leadership Metro Richmond has continually developed new and innovative ways to connect and inspire more community leaders. LMR has made an imprint on the city by graduating more than 1,800 people from its flagship program, Leadership Quest, and expanded its reach through programs for grassroots and high-potential leaders. Today, leaders from the private, public, non-profit and grassroots segment represent the LMR membership.
Leadership Metro Richmond is the only community leadership organization designed specifically to connect and inspire influential leaders; equipping them with the knowledge needed to passionately engage in the heartbeat of our region.
The Promise of LMR
Leadership Metro Richmond promises to continue strengthening the core of the Richmond region by keeping influential leaders informed, engaged and inspired.
Our 1,800+ membership continues to grow each year as selected leaders graduate from the LMR program with a deeper understanding of the Richmond region coupled with the passion to better engage in their community using the LMR model of servant leadership.
